{"id":9810,"date":"2013-01-14T11:42:33","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T19:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=9810"},"modified":"2013-01-14T18:12:16","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T02:12:16","slug":"tyranny-reigns-as-rightwing-nra-stooges-pretend-their-big-guns-fend-off-tyranny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=9810","title":{"rendered":"Tyranny Reigns as Rightwing NRA Stooges Pretend Their Big Guns Fend Off Tyranny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/OccupyUCDavis_LtJohnPike_PepperSpray_111811_med.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">So <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/2013\/01\/09\/judge-approves-pepper-spray-settlement\/\">this happened quietly last week<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">A federal judge approved a settlement resolving the class action lawsuit filed on behalf of demonstrators who were pepper-sprayed at UC Davis in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Court Judge John Mendez on Wednesday gave the final approval for the $1 million settlement, initially filed in September.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the settlement, the university has agreed to pay $30,000 to each of the 21 plaintiffs, a total of $250,000 to their attorneys and a total of $100,000 to 15 other claimants.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement also stipulates that UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi issue a formal written apology to the students and alumni who were pepper-sprayed. It also calls for the university to develop new policies regarding student demonstrations and use of force.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the very same week&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u00a2 A military judge agreed that U.S. Army Private <strong>Bradley Manning&#8217;s<\/strong> pre-trial confinement, for having allegedly leaked classified diplomatic cables, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2013\/jan\/09\/bradley-manning-wikileaks-mistreated-progressives\">was excessively harsh<\/a>, but refused to dismiss the charges against him. Instead, the judge reduced 4 months from Manning&#8217;s potential life sentence that he hasn&#8217;t even received yet while being jailed for 2 years and 8 months, so far, waiting for his day in military court. The judge also delayed the start of his trial for another 3 months in the bargain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u00a2 26-year old activist and Internet prodigy and pioneer <strong>Aaron Swartz<\/strong> killed himself after what his <a href=\"http:\/\/soupsoup.tumblr.com\/post\/40373383323\/official-statement-from-the-family-and-partner-of\">family describes<\/a> as bullying by a federal prosecutor who filed 13 felony charges against him &#8212; with potential penalties of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20120917\/17393320412\/us-government-ups-felony-count-jstoraaron-swartz-case-four-to-thirteen.shtml\">nearly 50 years in prison<\/a> &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/01\/12\/aaron-swartz_n_2463726.html?1358028863\">for something that has never been a crime<\/a> and has no victims.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, just a few weeks earlier&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u00a2 Britain&#8217;s largest bank, <strong>HSBC<\/strong>, was <a href=\"http:\/\/dealbook.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/10\/hsbc-said-to-near-1-9-billion-settlement-over-money-laundering\/?ref=business\">slapped on the wrist<\/a> with a $1.9 billion settlement (a few weeks of profit) for having knowingly laundered billions of dollars for drug cartels and terrorist organizations and rogue states after federal prosecutors in the U.S. decided that any harsher punishment &#8212; such as larger fines or taking them to court or, God forbid, sending <i>any<\/i> single one of their employees or board members to prison for even a day &#8212; would potentially result in bankruptcy for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/business\/2012\/dec\/11\/hsbc-fine-prosecution-money-laundering\">&#8220;too big to jail&#8221;<\/a> international bank.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, a few weeks before that&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u00a2 Oil giant <strong>BP<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/usnews.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2012\/11\/15\/15181916-bp-to-pay-45-billion-plead-guilty-to-manslaughter-in-gulf-of-mexico-oil-spill?lite\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to 11 counts of manslaughter and other criminal charges related to the massive oil spill and deaths of 11 men on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. They agreed to pay $4.5 billion in fines (they made more than that in profit alone in the third quarter of 2012) over a five year period.
