Perhaps it&#8217;s due to the &#8220;little gift&#8221;, as a senior GOP strategist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/front\/story\/247753p-212149c.html\" target=\"_blank\">appallingly described it<\/a>, that they were given by bin Laden on Friday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">&#8220;We want people to think &#8216;terrorism&#8217; for the last four days,&#8221; said a Bush-Cheney campaign official. &#8220;And anything that raises the issue in people&#8217;s minds is good for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A senior GOP strategist added, &#8220;anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He called it &#8220;a little gift,&#8221; saying it helps the President but doesn&#8217;t guarantee his reelection.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nonetheless, I&#8217;ll continue to stand by my previous prediction of a Kerry victory on Tuesday. Though now it&#8217;s all down to &#8220;GET OUT THE VOTE&#8221;, &#8220;GET OUT THE VOTE&#8221;, &#8220;GET OUT THE VOTE&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><b>If you are not helping to do that, please go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votercall.org\/register\" target=\"_blank\">Voter Call<\/a>, and join the effort from the comfort of your sofa, now! You. Are. Needed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>That said, here&#8217;s a round-up of the polls from yesterday, taken <i>after<\/i> Bush&#8217;s &#8220;little gift&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family : monospace; font-size : 9pt;\">DCorps: Bush 47 &#8211; Kerry 48<br \/>\nFox:    Bush 46 &#8211; Kerry 46<br \/>\nARG:    Bush 48 &#8211; Kerry 48<br \/>\nZogby:  Bush 48 &#8211; Kerry 48<br \/>\nWPost:  Bush 48 &#8211; Kerry 48<br \/>\nABC:    Bush 49 &#8211; Kerry 49<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Seemingly, about as close as you could get. But these are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mydd.com\/story\/2004\/10\/31\/9373\/7907\" target=\"_blank\">not good numbers<\/a> for either an encumbent or for a Republican. Look at today&#8217;s numbers, versus 2000&#8217;s numbers on the same days, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zogby.com\" target=\"_blank\">Zogby<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family : monospace; font-size : 9pt;\"><b>Election 2004<\/b><br \/>\n4 Days Out: Bush 46  &#8211; Kerry 47<br \/>\n3 Days Out: Bush 48  &#8211; Kerry 48<\/p>\n<p><b>Election 2000<\/b><br \/>\n4 Days Out: Bush 46  &#8211; Gore 42<br \/>\n3 Days Out: Bush 46  &#8211; Gore 44<br \/>\nFINAL RESULT: Bush 47.87% &#8211; Gore 48.38%<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, and perhaps even more reliable than all of the above: Without fail since 1933, if the Washington Redskins won their final home game, the incumbent has been re-elected.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family : monospace; font-size : 9pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/nfl\/scoreboard\" target=\"_blank\">Current score<\/a> of today&#8217;s Redskins\/Packers game in D.C.<br \/>\n<strike>(With 1:44 left in 4th Quarter)<\/strike> FINAL!: <br \/>\nRedskins 14 &#8211; Packers 28<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having watched the bulk of today&#8217;s Sunday news shows, I can report that the Republicans aren&#8217;t quite as nervous as they obviously were on last week&#8217;s shows.
