{"id":8097,"date":"2010-09-28T17:18:56","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T00:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=8097"},"modified":"2010-10-05T23:11:58","modified_gmt":"2010-10-06T06:11:58","slug":"experts-warn-against-dcs-planned-insane-internet-voting-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=8097","title":{"rendered":"Experts Warn Against D.C.&#8217;s Planned, Insane Internet Voting Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/ComputerBugsVirus_VoteHere.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">Along with the madness of <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7198\">Instant Runoff Voting (IRV)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=6003\">Vote-by-Mail<\/a>, Internet Voting is the other scheme\/virus that makes my head explode &#8212; as if the existing e-voting system we already use in the U.S. isn&#8217;t unverifiable, unoverseeable and susceptible enough to malfeasance and malfunction as is.<\/p>\n<p>So with the little patience I can muster to even mention this latest particular nightmare at all today, I&#8217;ll defer to <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/debonis\/2010\/09\/experts_raise_warning_flags_ov.html\"><i>Washington Post&#8217;s<\/i> coverage yesterday<\/a> &#8212; sure to be ignored until it&#8217;s too late (<em>&#8220;Who could have foreseen it?!<\/em>&#8220;) &#8212; of the experts&#8217; latest warnings <i>against<\/i> D.C.&#8217;s planned live democracy <i>experiment<\/i> of using an untested and unverifiable Internet Voting scheme on real voters, in a real election, beginning in just a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>WaPo<\/i> column includes this explanation of two letters sent to D.C. officials this week, urging them to take a different path&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/debonis\/Common_Cause_letter_to_BOEE.pdf\">first missive<\/a> [PDF] questions whether the digital vote by mail system is &#8220;voter-verifiable,&#8221; as required under the city&#8217;s new election laws. The voter has no way of confirming that the ballot he or she sent is the same one that is counted by elections officials, the letter argues.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/debonis\/CS_letter_to_Cheh.pdf\">second letter<\/a> [PDF] raises sharp concerns over the vulnerability to infiltration by hackers, calling the new system a &#8220;poorly conceived experiment&#8221; that &#8220;imperils the overall accuracy of every election on the ballot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The letter continues: &#8220;Return of marked ballots over the Internet is something we simply don&#8217;t know how to do safely. Exercises such as this are counterproductive, because they will provide a false sense of security to the [D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics], while the real problems lie undetected.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Four advil and three shots of vodka please.<\/p>\n<p><center><i><b>* * *<\/b><\/i><\/center><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE 10\/4\/10:<\/strong><\/em> Aaaaand&#8230;whaddaya know, D.C.
