{"id":7708,"date":"2010-02-19T13:14:40","date_gmt":"2010-02-19T21:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=7708"},"modified":"2010-02-24T16:03:42","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T00:03:42","slug":"giles-admits-okeefe-breitbart-acorn-pimp-story-was-a-lie-it-was-b-roll-purely-b-roll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7708","title":{"rendered":"Giles Admits O&#8217;Keefe, Breitbart ACORN &#8216;Pimp&#8217; Story was a Lie: &#8216;That Was B-Roll, Purely B-Roll&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/HannahGiles_GriffJenkins_CPAC_021910.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">Speaking to <i>Washington Independent<\/i> reporter David Weigel today at CPAC, Hannah Giles, who posed as a prostitute in James O&#8217;Keefe and Andrew Breitbart&#8217;s infamous, highly-doctored, heavily-overdubbed, secretly-taped, ACORN hit videos, confirms what we&#8217;ve been reporting for several weeks here: O&#8217;Keefe <i>never<\/i> dressed as a pimp in the offices of ACORN.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/77096\/hannah-giles-explains-those-pimp-and-prostitute-outfits\">Reports Weigel today<\/a> [<i>emphasis added<\/i>]:<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">I asked Giles about a criticism that&#8217;s often been leveled against them &#8220;\u201d that they hyped up the video by wearing outrageous clothes in promotional materials and the videos&#8217; introductions that they didn&#8217;t wear in the actual stings.<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8220;We never claimed that he went in with a pimp costume,&#8221;\u009d said Giles. &#8220;That was b-roll. It was purely b-roll.<\/b> He was a pimp, I was a prostitute, and we were walking in front of government buildings to show how the government was whoring out the American people.&#8221;\u009d<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;B-roll&#8221; refers to footage shot separately and later inserted during editing, as frequently seen in movies and television. E.g., an overhead helicopter shot of Las Vegas, used to establish where the scene takes place, before cutting to the interior of a casino where the main character is seen playing cards at a table.<\/p>\n<p>Giles&#8217; admission is in stark contrast to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vL68WFEw2Gk\">O&#8217;Keefe&#8217;s knowingly deceptive appearances on Fox &#8220;News&#8221;<\/a>  &#8220;dressed exactly in the same outfit that he wore in these ACORN offices up and down the Eastern Seaboard&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7705\">Breitbart&#8217;s out-and-out lies in his own 9\/21\/09 column<\/a> to help promote the videos by claiming they show O&#8217;Keefe and Giles &#8220;going to the Baltimore offices of ACORN &#8230; <b>dressed as a pimp<\/b> and a prostitute and asking for &#8211; and getting &#8211; help for various illegal activities&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>Breitbart&#8217;s 2\/15\/10 <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/andrewbreitbart\/status\/9173232773\">tweet to The BRAD BLOG<\/a> claiming that he&#8217;s &#8220;told truth every step of way&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7689\">repeated misreports by the <i>New York Times<\/i><\/a> (which they <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7692\">still stand behind<\/a> despite all lack of evidence) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/columns\/201002170008\">many other mainstream outlets<\/a> who were similarly hoodwinked into reporting the same phony story.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object width=\"240\" height=\"198\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/vL68WFEw2Gk&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en_US&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/vL68WFEw2Gk&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en_US&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" width=\"240\" height=\"198\" vspace=\"3\" hspace=\"6\" align=\"right\"><\/embed><\/object>Greg Brock, the <i>New York Times<\/i> Senior Editor for Standards, as <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7689\">we documented exclusively some weeks ago<\/a>, is even on email record as citing that Fox &#8220;News&#8221; appearance by O&#8217;Keefe (<i>embedded again at right<\/i>) as his <i>only<\/i> evidence to &#8220;stand by our reporting&#8221; in which the &#8220;paper of record&#8221; has, time and again, misreprested O&#8217;Keefe as having &#8220;visited Acorn offices &#8230; dressed so outlandishly that he might have been playing in a risque high school play.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Just two days after the <i>Times<\/i> described the &#8220;outlandish&#8221; dress of O&#8217;Keefe, the Congress of the United States passed legislation to remove federal funding for ACORN. (A<a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7610\"> federal judge later found<\/a> the legislation to be &#8220;unconstitutional&#8221;.)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <i>Times<\/i> has so far refused to retract, apologize, and investigate how and why it got the story so incredibly wrong, time and again, even though many have written to the paper&#8217;s Public Editor, Clark Hoyt (<a href=\"mailto:Public@NYTimes.com\">Public@NYTimes.com<\/a>) to request that he recommend exactly that. Hoyt had previously chided the paper in his column, for being &#8220;slow off the mark&#8221; in having waited &#8220;nearly a week after the first video was posted&#8221; before covering the videos.  A special editor was then assigned to devote attention to &#8220;issues that are dominating Fox News and talk radio.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet more than six months after the Times&#8217; first inaccurate report and dozens which followed, and even Congressional action following their coverage, the &#8220;paper of record&#8221; still refuses to issue retractions or explanations.<\/p>\n<p>We have now heard from Hoyt, concerning his remarkable justifications for not recommending such actions, and will report on those reasons in full in the coming days after he has had another chance to respond to the additional evidence we&#8217;ve supplied him showing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the <i>New York Times<\/i> was flat out wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Given that:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/OKeefeBreitbart_Pimp_LieLiar.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7705\">O&#8217;Keefe and Breitbart blatantly <i>lied<\/i><\/a> about their eye-popping, marquee promotional point for their story;<\/li>\n<li>that, in truth, O&#8217;Keefe represented himself to low-level ACORN workers as the college law school <i>boyfriend<\/i> of Giles, desperately trying to <i>save her<\/i> from the house of an abusive pimp who she believed would kill her (a point only made clear when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acorn.org\/fileadmin\/HomePageNews\/2009Dec\/Video_Transcript_Analysis_withExcperts.pdf\">examining the posted text transcripts<\/a>, as opposed to the misleadingly edited videos &#8212; as O&#8217;Keefe and Breitbart still refuse to release the <i>un<\/i>edited videos);<\/li>\n<li>that O&#8217;Keefe was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkingpointsmemo.com\/documents\/2010\/01\/affidavit-detailing-charges-against-james-okeefe-filmmaker-who-broke-acorn-story.php?page=1\">recently arrested and charged<\/a> with falsely identifying himself in order to commit a federal felony in the offices of a Democratic U.S. Senator;<\/li>\n<li>that he&#8217;s since offered a <a href=\"http:\/\/emptywheel.firedoglake.com\/2010\/01\/29\/teabugger-okeefe-liberate-the-tapes-no-not-those-tapes\/\">preposterous explanation<\/a> for those alleged federal felonies;<\/li>\n<li>that two separate independent reports (<a href=\"http:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/news\/091222.html\">Congressional Research Service<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.proskauer.com\/files\/uploads\/report2.pdf\">former MA Attorney General [PDF]<\/a>) have each found no criminal wrong-doing by ACORN workers (though it appears that O&#8217;Keefe and Giles actually broke the law in at least two states by secretly taping);<\/li>\n<li>and that the <i>Times<\/i> noted only the CRS report in a small item buried on Page 15, and <i>never<\/i> told readers about the former AG&#8217;s report which found, among other things, that &#8220;Although Mr. O&#8217;Keefe appeared in all videos dressed as a pimp, in fact, when he appeared at each and every office, he was dressed like a college student &#8211; in slacks and a button down shirt&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;it remains all the more remarkable that the Times is <i>still<\/i> standing by the entirely phony story.<\/p>\n<p>And if Breitbart and O&#8217;Keefe were <i>that<\/i> willing to lie about last year&#8217;s &#8220;successful&#8221; scam, and the media were so gullible as to report it without fact checking <i>any<\/i> of it, what will they be willing to say and do now that Breitbart&#8217;s employee O&#8217;Keefe is facing the possibility of ten years in jail? Without examining how they screwed up in giving uncritical coverage to the &#8220;successful&#8221; scam, safe money is on the same media outlets screwing up yet again in reporting O&#8217;Keefe&#8217;s latest legal troubles and the rightwing political agenda media scams he has set for the future.<\/p>\n<p><i>As promised, more to come in the days ahead, including <a href=\"mailto:Public@NYTimes.com\">Hoyt&#8217;s<\/a> responses to date&#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong><\/em> For the record, as <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7705\">detailed on Wednesday here<\/a>, these are just some of the many other mainstream media outlets, in addition to the <em>NYTimes<\/em> (and Fox &#8220;News&#8221;), which are quoted on the record as similarly misreporting the fake O&#8217;Keefe\/Breitbart ACORN &#8216;pimp&#8217; story: <em>Baltimore Sun<\/em>, CNN, <em>New York Post<\/em>, <em>Washington City Paper<\/em>, <em>Philadelphia Daily News<\/em>, NPR, <em>Dallas Morning News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Like the <em>Times<\/em>, those outlets also still owe their readers retractions and apologies.
