Texas registrar, Paul Bettencourt ran for re-election recently and won that race. Before even being sworn into office again, he resigned to take a job in the private sector, or so he claims.

In today’s featured articles from the Houston Chronicle there is information that may answer the question as to why he resigned. It seems that a lawsuit was filed today in state district court by J. Goodwille Pierre who unsuccessfully ran for a judicial position. He lost by 230 votes. His lawsuit echoes a lawsuit brought against the county elections office in federal court. One of the issues brought forth is evidence that the chairman of the county ballot board had reported that some ballots, after being processed by Bettencourt’s staff, had information obscured by correction fluid. About 5,800 ballots were denied, according to Bettencourt’s office, because the voters had not been properly registered. We will follow both lawsuits….

Featured – TX: Harris County – Bettencourt or no, Dems press forward with voter suit
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/6157790.html

Featured – TX: Harris County – Candidate’s suit claims voting problems cost him race
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6159542.html

CA: Humboldt County – Humboldt At The Tipping Point: Who Dares Defend Diebold?
http://www.opednews.com/articles/Humboldt-At-The-Tipping-Po-by-Dave-Berman-081211-302.html

MN: Minneapolis goes to court over new voting style
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/12/10/irv_voting_adopted/

MN: Does rule of law trump right to vote?
The Canvassing Board will meet Friday to discuss what to do about the rejected absentee ballots –and those 133 Minneapolis ballots.
http://www.startribune.com/politics/state/35936619.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUsA

MN: Coleman-Franken Recount: 10 questions (and even some answers) about why Friday is a really — no kidding — ginormously important day
http://www.minnpost.com/stories/2008/12/11/5214/coleman-franken_recount_10_questions_and_even_some_answers_about_why_friday_is_a_really_–_no_kidding_–_ginormously_important_day

PA: Northampton County – Elections judge is faulted
http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/113-12112008-1636236.html

TX: Dallas County – Voting mix-up cited in provisional ballot fight in state House race
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/politics/local/stories/121108dnmetaffidavits.3d2d8c8.html

VA: General Assembly to consider changes at the polls
http://www.newsadvance.com/lna/news/state_regional/article/general_assembly_to_consider_changes_at_the_polls/11484/

**”Daily Voting News” is meant as a comprehensive listing of reports each day concerning issues related to election and voting news around the country regardless of quality or political slant.
