{"id":5786,"date":"2008-03-10T16:24:32","date_gmt":"2008-03-10T23:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=5786"},"modified":"2008-03-11T02:41:19","modified_gmt":"2008-03-11T09:41:19","slug":"mashed-into-bits-florida-touch-screen-voting-machines-28000-of-them-to-be-crushed-recycled-repurposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=5786","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Mashed Into Bits&#8217;: Florida Touch-Screen Voting Machines &#8211; 28,000 of them &#8211; to be Crushed, Recycled, Repurposed&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/HillsboroughCountyFL_DREsScrapped.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\"><em>Blogged by Brad from the road&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The report is music to our ears, and far too long in coming. <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.tbo.com\/content\/2008\/mar\/10\/hillsborough-hauls-away-touch-screen-voting-machin\/\">From today&#8217;s <em>Tampa Tribune<\/em>&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">TAMPA &#8211; Workers today started loading more than 3,000 touch-screen voting machines destined to be resold, disassembled or crunched into bits by a recycler as Hillsborough County begins changing how ballots are cast and counted.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nThe devices will be replaced by machines that scan and record paper ballots as part of a legislatively mandated change requiring a paper trail after elections.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nThe machines being hauled away by Creative Recycling of Tampa were 6 years old. The company has a state contract to dispose of 27,785 of the touch-screen machines in counties using them.<\/div>\n<p>Hillsborough County&#8217;s Supervisor of Elections, Buddy Johnson, offers the best use of the machines &#8212; he says in the article that &#8220;he wanted to donate one to the county&#8217;s history museum&#8221; &#8212; but beware, while some are to be scrapped, some of these bad machines may show up at an election near you&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">The first step for the recycling company is to try selling the machines to states that still allow touch-screen voting.<\/p>\n<p>Then, Creative Recycling workers will extract parts that can be resold, such as a thermal printer in each machine.<\/p>\n<p>Any pieces that can&#8217;t be sold will wind up shoved into a two-story-tall machine that will mash them into bits that will be separated and recycled.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We shall drift off to bed tonight, imagining the sweet, sweet sound of touch-screen voting machines being &#8220;mashed into bits.&#8221; We <em>never<\/em> thought we&#8217;d say it, but: Thank you, Florida.<\/p>\n<div class=\"BBTOORepost\">Please support <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=5705\"><strong>The BRAD BLOG&#8217;s Fund Drive<\/strong><\/a> and our continuing coverage of your election system, as found <em>nowhere<\/em> else. <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=5705\">Click here<\/a> for a number of cool new collector&#8217;s edition Premium products now available for new contributors!<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blogged by Brad from the road&#8230; The report is music to our ears, and far too long in coming.
