There will still be some ballots to be counted, but the last election on the state’s DREs is complete. There were some reports of problems scattered around the state. Election officials and the media were pretty successful in minimizing the reports. However, there was one small graf in one article that jumped out at me. The county clerk in Volusia County had announced that they were going to have to recount one early voting precinct because the Diebold Optical-Scan used in that precinct had not counted 4 ballots. They are doing this, according to the report, because Diebold/Premier had sent counties in Florida an advisory that the machines used in those counties may stop with a ballot partially fed through. Those ballots are not being counted when this happens. My first reaction was, “How many other states/counties that use the Diebold AccuVote OS v. 1.94w have gotten this advisory?” This is the same system used in New Hampshire and many other Northeast jurisdictions as well as various counties across the nation. Why don’t vendors of these machines recall them when there is a problem like this? Who should be responsible to ensure the word is put out that there is a problem and ensure the problem is solved? …

NAtional: Electronic voting is facing a recall
Officials are switching systems or trying to fix problems, even as they contend with new laws and earlier primaries.
http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/asection/la-na-natvote29jan29,1,625897,full.story?ctrack=2&cset=true

NAtional: Battle for Election Integrity ‘Fought and Won by Activists’ Says LATimes in 2,800-Word, 2-Part Series Which Doesn’t Bother to Quote a Single One of Them…
https://bradblog.com/?p=5626

NAtional: What the World Needs Now: Voting method suggestions for archaic America
Not the right to vote, but the ability to vote
http://www.thepost.ohiou.edu/Articles/Opinion/2008/01/30/22615/

NAtional: Filmmaker examines election fraud, voter suppression
http://www.kccommunitynews.com/articles/2008/01/30/wednesday_sun/news/doc479e2430ddb24930136992.txt

NAtional: Touch-screen me not
Reformers want change in voting procedures.
http://www.arktimes.com/Articles/ArticleViewer.aspx?ArticleID=19945e52-19a9-4098-9ccb-c809d33e5d1c

AR: Benton County – Early voting begins; ‘glitch’ doesn’t deter voters
http://nwanews.com/bcdr/News/58289/

CA: Appeals court rejects county election challenge
http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/01/30/news/sandiego/20_47_441_29_08.txt

CA: San Bernardino County – Planes may speed ballots
County seeks to hurry vote tally
http://www.sbsun.com/news/ci_8114325

CA: Santa Clara County predicts delays in vote count
http://www.paloaltoonline.com/news/show_story.php?id=7007

CO: Decertification of machines has clerks looking for answers
http://www.lamardaily.com/articles/2008/01/30/news/local_news/doc47a0926169c7f442596911.txt

CO: Denver to Use Paper Ballots, Consolidate Polls
http://www.govtech.com/gt/articles/260016

CO: Logan County – Election woes may not affect Logan County
Schneider reassures voters paper ballots work fine
http://www.journal-advocate.com/articles/2008/01/30/news/local_news/local2.txt

CO: Mesa County – Residents urged to register for mail-in balloting
http://www.gjsentinel.com/hp/content/news/stories/2008/01/29/013008_1b_Mail_ballots.html

FL: It’s the Voters’ Fault.
