The city had a 10% turnout of voters for a city-wide election and had a problem understanding why. This voter and his wife went to their normal polling place, where they had voted since they moved to the city. They were told their polls had been moved two miles away. They went to the new polling place, which was not marked by an American flag, only to find that their polling place was really a half-block away. They went to this venue, again not marked by an American flag, and voted. The writer is legally blind, uses a white cane, and a special lighted magnifying glass. He voted with a lot of trouble and as he was leaving the polls noticed a machine set up in a corner. He asked a poll worker about the machine and was told that it was there for voters with disabilities. Apparently none of the poll workers had used the white cane and lighted magnifying glass as a sign that the writer was sight impaired. This all points to poor election administration and gives an indication that some people just don’t care if we vote. At least not until a few days later when they add up the participation percentage and realize how low it is and blame the voters for not caring about our democracy.

Links and headlines for today’s notable voting news stories follow below…

NAtional: Voting technology must be checked, expert says
http://media.www.dailyfreepress.com/media/storage/paper87/news/2007/10/24/News/Voting.Technology.Must.Be.Checked.Expert.Says-3053162.shtml

AZ: Pima County – Election security tab for county could be $10 million
http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/local/66713.php

AZ: Pima County – Pima faces long wait to learn results of elections
Computer-hacking worries could delay news for a day
http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/related/207914.php

CA: Butte County – Next election could cost county $400,000
http://www.chicoer.com/ci_7263653?source=most_emailed

CA: Riverside County to buy ballot tabulators
http://www.pe.com/localnews/rivcounty/stories/PE_News_Local_D_vote24.3df8cb3.html

CO: Ouray County – Sign, seal and return your ballots
http://www.ouraynews.com/1editorialbody.lasso?-token.folder=2007-10-24&-token.story=165243.112113&-token.subpub=

CT: Election Ushers in ‘Bubble-In’ Era
http://www.westport-news.com/ci_7268207

FL: Lee County – Lee to buy voting machines for paper trail
http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2007/oct/23/lee_buy_voting_machines_paper_trail/?breaking_news

LA: Saint Landry Parish – Voting Machine Problems on Election Day
http://www.klfy.com/Global/story.asp?S=7248555

MS: Jackson County – Election commission preparing for November’s general election
http://www.gulflive.com/news/mississippipress/index.ssf?/base/news/1193220952296890.xml

PA: Fayette County – Fayette polling change debated
http://www.heraldstandard.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=18949091&BRD=2280&PAG=461&dept_id=480247&rfi=6

WI: No Backups of Election Records
http://washburnsworld.blogspot.com/2007/10/no-backups-of-election-records.html

Guam: Senators approve conditional use of electronic voting stations
http://www.kuam.com/news/25032.aspx

Scotland: Alexander Says Sorry For Election Fiasco
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2007/10/24/alexander-says-sorry-for-election-fiasco-86908-20001338/

**”Daily Voting News” is meant as a comprehensive listing of reports each day concerning issues related to election and voting news around the country regardless of quality or political slant.
