The only topic of conversation was religion. At right is a short mashup of the most egregious moments from the interview.<\/p>\n<p>As you can imagine, it&#8217;s created, um, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=john+mccain+beliefnet&#038;ie=utf-8&#038;oe=utf-8&#038;aq=t&#038;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&#038;client=firefox-a\">a bit of a hubbub<\/a>. And rightfully so- the New York Times ran the headline <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/09\/30\/us\/politics\/30mccain.html?_r=1&#038;ref=todayspaper&#038;oref=slogin\">McCain Casts Muslims as Less Fit to Lead<\/a>; Carpetbagger went with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/13053.html\">McCain sees Constitution establishing a &#8216;Christian nation.&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybackground.com\/2007\/09\/30\/mccain-hurriedly-tries-to-backtrack-on-bigoted-interview-comments\/\">brief statement<\/a> issued by his campaign, McCain is hoping to clear up any confusion. &#8220;I would vote for a Muslim if he or she was the candidate best able to lead the country and defend our political values,&#8221; the Senator is quoted as now saying.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, as can clearly be seen in the above video, McCain states the following about what he thinks the number one prerequisite for being president should be:<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">&#8220;I think the number one issue people should make [in the] selection of the President of the United States is, &#8216;Will this person carry on in the Judeo Christian principled tradition that has made this nation the greatest experiment in the history of mankind?'&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>And yet now he claims that he&#8217;d be okay with voting for a Muslim candidate?<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/archives\/054583.php\">Steven Benen says today at TPM<\/a>, apparently the Senator &#8220;was for discrimination before he was against it.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guest Blogged by Arlen Parsa of The Daily Background Recently, John McCain gave an interview to a religious website called Beliefnet.
