{"id":5037,"date":"2007-09-05T23:14:02","date_gmt":"2007-09-06T06:14:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=5037"},"modified":"2007-09-06T01:31:55","modified_gmt":"2007-09-06T08:31:55","slug":"ny-times-calls-for-ban-on-touch-screen-voting-finally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=5037","title":{"rendered":"NY Times Calls For Ban on Touch-Screen Voting (Finally!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Blogged by Brad from Colorado&#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/NewYorkTimes.gif\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/09\/06\/opinion\/06thu1.html?_r=1&#038;oref=slogin\">editorial for Thursday&#8217;s paper<\/a>, the <i>New York Times<\/i> has finally called for an all-out ban on touch-screen voting machines.<\/p>\n<p>Writing that &#8220;electronic voting has been an abysmal failure,&#8221; the newspaper of record &#8212; which has been an abysmal failure, overall, in investigating and reporting on election-related issues over the past many years &#8212; opines in favor of the flawed Rush Holt Election Reform Bill, though aptly declares that &#8220;The bill lacks one important thing: a ban on touch-screen voting machines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They add that &#8220;there is still time before the bill becomes law to add a ban on touch-screen voting&#8221; and that scheduling such changes for 2012 is &#8220;too long to wait.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here are the grafs that the <i>Times<\/i> gets almost exactly right [<em>emphasis ours<\/em>]:<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\"><strong>It is unfortunate that the bill does not contain a provision banning the use of touch-screen voting machines.<\/strong> A touch-screen ban would encourage states to use optical scan machines, which rely on paper ballots read by a computer, like a standardized test form. Optical scans are less expensive and less vulnerable to vote theft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is still time before the bill becomes law to add a ban on touch-screen voting.<\/strong> If the House fails to do so, the Senate should, and it should fight for it to be in the final bill.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a spirited debate about how quickly to require reforms to be implemented. <strong>There have been calls for putting a solution off until 2012. That is too long to wait.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but what took you so long, <i>New York Times<\/i>?  But never mind that. The question now is: What is taking <em>Congress<\/em> &#8212; specifically Congressional <em>Democrats<\/em> &#8212; so long?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s E-Voting: Game Over. Time to ban DREs once and for all, precisely as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.BradBlog.com\">The BRAD BLOG<\/a> has been calling for now for <i>years<\/i>. Even the <i>NY Times<\/i> gets it. Finally.
