Correspondent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.MargieBurns.com\">Margie Burns<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/BushCheney_SOTU2003_Bogus.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\">On Tuesday, April 3, 2007 the <em>Washington Post<\/em> finally got around to publishing a front-page article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/04\/02\/AR2007040201777.html?hpid=topnews\">&#8220;How Bogus Letter Became a Case for War,&#8221;\u009d<\/a> on the bogus Niger\/uranium\/Iraq story underlying those infamous &#8220;16 words&#8221;\u009d in Bush&#8217;s 2003 State of the Union speech. <\/p>\n<p>The <em>Post<\/em> subtitle is &#8220;Intelligence Failures Surrounded Inquiry on Iraq-Niger Uranium Claim.&#8221;\u009d A more accurate subtitle would have read, &#8220;Intelligence Community Caved to Bush-Cheney Pressure.&#8221;\u009d<\/p>\n<p>{<i>Ed Note: We might suggest &#8220;Mainstream Media Failure to do Job, Scrutinize Admin&#8217;s Iraq-Niger Claim, Led to Endless War&#8221; &#8211; BF<\/i>}<\/p>\n<p>I, among others, am familiar with the chronology because I wrote about it almost a full three years ago&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FItalian-Letter-Bush-Administration-Build%2Fdp%2F1594865736%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1175803691%26sr%3D8-1&#038;tag=tbb-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/TheItalianLetter_EisnerRoyce.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\"><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=tbb-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>The article, from a book by Peter Eisner and Knut Royce also released Tuesday (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FItalian-Letter-Bush-Administration-Build%2Fdp%2F1594865736%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1175803691%26sr%3D8-1&#038;tag=tbb-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"><i>The Italian Letter: How the Bush Administration Used a Fake Letter to Build the Case for War in Iraq<\/i><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=tbb-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>, Rodale Press), follows a chronology most <a href=\"http:\/\/www.BradBlog.com\">BRAD BLOG<\/a> may be familiar with by now, about some obviously forged documents purporting a deal by Saddam to acquire uranium for nukes.<\/p>\n<p>Better late than never:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>July 7, 2004<\/strong> &#8212; The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence published its long awaited <em>Report on the U.S. Intelligence Community&#8217;s Prewar Intelligence Assessments on Iraq<\/em>, including a chapter (pages 36-83) on the bogus Niger uranium item.<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 20, 2004<\/strong> &#8220;\u201c Piecing together the narrative from the Senate report, I published an article re the Niger uranium item in Bev Conover&#8217;s estimable onlinejournal, titled <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinejournal.com\/artman\/publish\/article_1919.shtml\">&#8220;No Political Pressure?&#8221;\u009d <\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Summer, 2004<\/strong> &#8220;\u201c Frustrated that little of this really hideous story was being reported in big media outlets, in an election year, I also discussed it on Louie Free&#8217;s Ohio radio show;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;And published on the lies leading to war elsewhere, including <a href=\"http:\/\/comitecanadien.netfirms.com\/ENGLISH\/HUMANITY2000\/BURNS\/heroes.htm\">&#8220;Unsung Heroes, Including a Dead One?&#8221;\u009d<\/a> published by comite canadien. <\/li>\n<li>&#8230;and in my local community newspaper, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesentinel.com\/314794874417639.php\">this piece is still archived<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>October 2004<\/strong> &#8220;\u201c The conservative Midwestern magazine <em>Chronicles<\/em> republished my &#8220;No Political Pressure?&#8221;\u009darticle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>April 2005<\/strong> &#8220;\u201c The point that France was uniquely in a position to debunk that &#8220;yellowcake&#8221;\u009d story was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimorechronicle.com\/040805Burns.html\">worth making again<\/a>. Et cetera.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not that I was alone: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In 2005<\/strong>, the paperback edition of Joe Wilson&#8217;s book,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FPolitics-Truth-Diplomats-Betrayed-Identity%2Fdp%2FB000EMH5LQ%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1175804021%26sr%3D1-1&#038;tag=tbb-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"><em>The Politics of Truth<\/em><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=tbb-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>, was released, with a lengthy foreword by Russ Hoyle covering the same chronology (with disclaimer from the publisher).<\/li>\n<li><strong>June 2006<\/strong> &#8220;\u201c Craig Unger came out with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omblog.net\/2006062w.html\">good article on the same chronology<\/a> in Vanity Fair.<\/li>\n<li>\nAnd Paul Thompson at <a href=\"http:\/\/cooperativeresearch.org\">cooperativeresearch.org<\/a> has pulled together a massively documented timeline leading up to 9\/11 and to the Iraq war.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, in April 2007, with more than 3,000 U.S. troops killed in Iraq and thousands wounded, with hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed, the stability of Iraq destroyed, the world&#8217;s biggest U.S. embassy being readied in Iraq, and legislation or &#8220;government policy&#8221;\u009d in the works to give U.S. and U.K. oil companies effective control of the distribution of Iraqi oil, the <em>Washington Post<\/em> finally fills in some missing details on the bogus uranium documents.<\/p>\n<p>How about that &#8220;liberal media&#8221;, huh?<\/p>\n<p>We learn from the front-pager that 1) it was 3 a.m. in Italy when Bush read his 2003 State of the Union address; 2) Italian journalist Elisabetta Burba approached the U.S. Embassy in Rome through a security gate and a magnetometer; and 3) the embassy press spokesman Burba met was named Ian Kelly.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to know whether to cry or laugh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOLLOW UP&#8230; <\/strong>On the recommendation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.BradBlog.com\">BRAD BLOG&#8217;s<\/a> editor-in-chief Brad Friedman, I have written the <em>Washington Post<\/em> ombudsman and two <em>Post<\/em> reporters with questions about what I reported last week as an <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=4336\">apparent swift-boating on their pages<\/a>, purportedly from within the DOJ, of U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald.  I&#8217;ve asked for explanation on their having run a misleading (at best) front-pager asserting an &#8220;undistinguished&#8221; rating for Fitzgerald based solely on unnamed &#8220;administration sources&#8221; and without apparently viewing the document they reported on.
