{"id":4212,"date":"2007-03-01T21:01:40","date_gmt":"2007-03-02T05:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=4212"},"modified":"2007-09-08T14:55:09","modified_gmt":"2007-09-08T21:55:09","slug":"daily-voting-news-for-march-01-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=4212","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Daily Voting News&#8217; For March 01, 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Guest Blogged by John Gideon of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.VotersUnite.org\">VotersUnite.org<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.VotersUnite.org\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/DVNLogo.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\"><\/a><a href=\"\u009dhttp:\/\/www.votersunite.org\/info\/2007ElectionReform.asp\"\u009d>LINK<\/a> There are many good provisions in the new election reform bill (HR 811 introduced by Congressman Rush Holt D-NJ), called the &#8220;Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2007.&#8221;\u009d For example, it would ban wireless communications to reduce the possibility of some types of hacking; it would prevent Diebold, Sequoia, and other voting machine companies from using secret software on the voting machines; and it would require partial hand counts to check the accuracy of the machines. <\/p>\n<p>However, the primary problem with the bill is that it allows the continued use of Direct Record Electronic (DRE), or &#8220;touch screen&#8221;\u009d voting machines, as long as they print out a copy of the electronic record of your vote for you to approve (called a &#8220;voter-verified paper audit trail&#8221;\u009d or &#8220;VVPAT&#8221;\u009d). But this &#8220;band-aid&#8221;\u009d cannot solve the systemic problems inherent to DREs. Democracy demands that DREs be banned from all American elections. <\/p>\n<p>It has been said of those calling for a &#8220;ban DREs&#8221;\u009d amendment to HR 811 that we intend to &#8220;kill&#8221;\u009d the bill. Nothing could be further from the truth.
