Determined to continue the abusive policies, the Bush Administration sought out legal opinions which allowed them to go &#8220;above the law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edwardsdavid.com\/media\/cnn\/images\/cnn_am_secret_torture_memo_060221g2.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\">The <i>New Yorker<\/i> exposes the secret document (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/images\/pdfs\/moramemo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">PDF<\/a>) in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fact\/content\/articles\/060227fa_fact\" target=\"_blank\">newly published article<\/a> by Jane Mayer. In an interview with <i>CNN American Morning<\/i>, Mayer said: <\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">It&#8217;s clear that [the Bush Administration ] were consistently resisting any criticism on this&#8230; instead of listening to [the Navy counsel], they basically found another lawyer, somebody in the Justice Department named John Woo, who told them what they wanted to hear which was <b>they could pretty much do anything they wanted<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a policy decision on their part. This wasn&#8217;t an accident &#8211; what happened at Guant\u00e1namo and what later happened at Abu Ghraib in terms of mistreatment of prisoners.   <b>They did this with their eyes wide open.<\/b><\/div>\n<p><b>UPDATE:<\/b> The name in <i>CNN<\/i> screenshot above should be spelled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/zfacts.com\/p\/103.html\" target=\"_blank\">John Yoo<\/a>&#8221; instead of &#8220;John Woo&#8221;.
