Buy White House aides enough drinks and they tell a sordid tale of an administration under siege, beset by bitter staff infighting and led by a man whose mood swings suggest paranoia bordering on schizophrenia. They describe an angry, obscenity-spouting man who berates staff, unleashes tirades and ends meetings with \u201cget out of here!\u201d<\/p>\n

Bush’s mood swings have become so drastic that White House emails often contain \u201cweather reports\u201d to warn of the President’s demeanor. \u201cThere’s real concern in the West Wing that the President is losing it,\u201d a high-level aide told me.<\/p><\/div>\n

Do I<\/i> think the President is losing it? No. I think he lost it a long time ago. However, the entire piece<\/a> is worth a read: not too long and very well-written. Thompson quotes a prominent psychiatrist calling Bush an untreated former alcoholic. Take a look at the photo [of Bush with Dennis Hastert] and decide for yourself whether the word “former” seems appropriate. Click on the photo if you’re not sure.
