With a calculator!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=542&#038;u=\/ap\/20040430\/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe\/iraq_deaths_wolfowitz_2&#038;printer=1\" target=\"_Blank\">According to <i>AP<\/i><\/a>, when asked yesterday how many troops have died in Iraq at a House Sub-committee hearing , Wolfowitz&#8217; estimate was some <b>200<\/b> American servicemen short:<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">&#8220;It&#8217;s approximately 500, of which \u2014 I can get the exact numbers \u2014 approximately 350 are combat deaths,&#8221; he responded.<\/div>\n<p>The actual number, as of Thursday, was 724 total dead with 522 of them killed in combat according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defenselink.mil\/news\/Apr2004\/d20040429cas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">documentation on the Defense Department&#8217;s own website<\/a>. As of this morning, twenty-four hours later, the numbers are 732 and 530 respectively according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defenselink.mil\/news\/Apr2004\/d20040430cas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">their website documentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drudgereport.com\/flash6.htm\" target=\"_blank\">a highly critical letter<\/a> to them from War Supporter, Veteran, Prisoner of War and Republican Senator John McCain, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbgi.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sinclair Broadcast Group<\/a> is refusing to carry tonight&#8217;s <i>Nightline<\/i> show on their 8 owned ABC affiliate stations across the country.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>UPDATED INFO SINCE POSTING THE ABOVE:<\/i><\/b> Despite Sinclair CEO David Smith&#8217;s claims that they would not run the broadcast because <i>Nightline<\/i> is &#8220;doing nothing more than making a political statement,&#8221; it&#8217;s worth noting that Sinclair has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/softmoney\/softcomp1.asp?txtName=Sinclair+Broadcast\" target=\"_blank\">so far donated<\/a> well over $100,000 in hard and soft money to Republican Candidates and $0 to Democrats since 2000.<\/p>\n<p>As well, the Conservative website Newsmax.com reports the following in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/archives\/articles\/2004\/1\/28\/150537.shtml\" target=\"_Blank\">a January article <\/a>titled &#8220;Sinclair, The Next Fox, &#8216;Fair and Balanced'&#8221; about Sinclair&#8217;s National News program distributed to the stations they own:<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">As [Sinclair Vice-President Mark] Hyman puts it, &#8220;The left&#8217;s real beef is who controls the microphone. We&#8217;re not liberal. We&#8217;re not providing a slanted view. And that&#8217;s what really angers them.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Sinclair CEO David Smith echoed that sentiment, telling the Washington Post that his aim is to offer a &#8220;fair and balanced&#8221; news program, something missing on the major network news programs. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our objective is to tell the story in the most truthful and honest way possible,&#8221; he said, adding, &#8220;There will be no spin.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As mentioned, tonight&#8217;s <i>Nightline<\/i> will do nothing more than read the names and show the pictures of those American&#8217;s killed in action in Iraq.
