{"id":10343,"date":"2013-10-31T18:59:01","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T01:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=10343"},"modified":"2013-10-31T19:01:00","modified_gmt":"2013-11-01T02:01:00","slug":"they-just-cant-drive-55-without-section-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=10343","title":{"rendered":"They Just Can&#8217;t Drive 55 (Without Section 5)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norman_Ornstein\">Norm Ornstein<\/a> of the very conservative <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Enterprise_Institute\">American Enterprise Institute (AEI)<\/a>, writes this week <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaljournal.com\/washington-inside-out\/the-right-to-vote-20131030\">at <i>National Journal<\/i>&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">It is becoming increasingly obvious that the Supreme Court decision in <i>Shelby County v. Holder<\/i>, which eviscerated the Voting Rights Act, is leading to a new era of voter suppression that parallels the pre-1960s era&#8221;\u201dthis time affecting not just African-Americans but also Hispanic-Americans, women, and students, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The reasoning employed by Chief Justice John Roberts in <i>Shelby County<\/i>&#8220;\u201dthat Section 5 of the act was such a spectacular success that it is no longer necessary&#8221;\u201dwas the equivalent of taking down speed cameras and traffic lights and removing speed limits from a dangerous intersection because they had combined to reduce accidents and traffic deaths.<\/div>\n<p>I won&#8217;t be surprised if history finds the <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=10094\"><i>Shelby County<\/i> ruling<\/a>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7709\"><i>Citizens United<\/i><\/a>, to be right up there in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dred_Scott_v._Sandford\"><i>Dred Scott<\/i><\/a> pantheon of terrible rulings by a U.S. Supreme Court.
