{"id":10048,"date":"2013-06-05T14:09:17","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T21:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=10048"},"modified":"2013-06-06T17:06:11","modified_gmt":"2013-06-07T00:06:11","slug":"ny-state-assembly-introduces-bill-to-restore-lever-voting-machines-in-nyc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=10048","title":{"rendered":"NY State Legislature Introduces Bill to Restore Lever Voting Machines in NYC This Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/LeverVoting_reliable.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">Not to say we told ya so, but&#8230; Rachel Barnhart of Rochester&#8217;s WROC-TV just <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rachbarnhart\/status\/342379839954767872\">tweeted<\/a> this: &#8220;Wow, state assembly intro&#39;s bill to allow NYC to bring back lever machines for primary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;And then there was this, last night, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ny1.com\/content\/top_stories\/183223\/source--deal-in-place-to-use-lever-machines-for-september-primary\">from NY1&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">It&#8217;s back to the future for voters in the mayor&#8217;s race this fall, as a source says the old lever voting machines are set to replace the city&#8217;s new high-tech optical scanning machines.<\/p>\n<p>A source tells NY1 a deal has been made in the New York State legislature that will allow the old machines to be used for the September 10 primary.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Board of Elections officials say the new optical scanners are too slow to allow them to plan for a likely runoff in the crowded Democratic primary race.<\/p>\n<p>A runoff is necessary if no candidate wins at least 40 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear if the old machines will also be used for the November 5 general election.<\/p>\n<p>The city spent more than $95 million on the new optical scanning machines, which were first used in 2010.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For <i>much<\/i> more on all of this, why NY is doing what it&#8217;s doing, and what&#8217;s <i>really<\/i> wrong with its new, oft-failed, easily-manipulated optical-scan computer tabulation system, please see our detailed report on all of this from March: <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=9903\">&#8220;New York City Considers Move Back to Lever Voting Machines For September Elections&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re welcome.<\/p>\n<p><center><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/center><\/p>\n<p><i><b>UPDATE 6\/6\/13:<\/b><\/i> New York&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amsterdamnews.com\/politics_noir\/senate-votes-to-bring-back-lever-style-voting-machines\/article_f01bfe90-cebb-11e2-93a6-001a4bcf887a.html\"><i>Amsterdam News<\/i> reports<\/a> the bill to restore lever machine voting in NYC &#8220;has passed the Senate, and the Assembly is seriously considering returning to lever machines&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">State Sen.
