Election Integrity Champion, Vote-Rigging Whistleblower, Trounces Primary Opponent!
'Battle between Good and Evil', November showdown between Curtis and Feeney begins!
By Winter Patriot on 9/5/2006 5:33pm PT

Guest blogged by Winter Patriot

According to reliable sources, WESH-TV has called Clint Curtis the winner of the FL-24 Democratic primary by a landslide. Curtis had 12,652 votes, compared to 7,990 for Michaud: That's 61% for the vote-rigging whistleblower, with 208 out of 257 precincts reporting, or or 81%.

According to other reliable sources, a reporter from the Daytona Beach News-Journal called Clint and asked whether he wanted to make a statement. Clint said:

It's looking good and we are glad to see it, but I don't want to make my statement yet.

I see no reason to declare victory until every vote in Florida's 24th is counted. The voters deserve that much.

I hadn't planned to either concede or declare victory tonight. We've campaigned for six months. We can wait another 6 hours or 6 days if we have to. Each vote is that precious.

So ... shall we let the party begin? Well, really: there's no hurry!

If Clint can wait until all the votes are counted, then so can we!

Unrest following killing of 'rebel leader' Nawab Akbar Bugti doesn't want to go away ...

Online News [Pakistan] September 6, 2006: NATO forces be deployed in Balochistan: BNP [emphasis added, here and below]

ISLAMABAD: Abdul Rauf Mengal MNA of Balochistan National Party (BNP) has said he will resign from his assembly seat as per party decision today to register protest against killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti (photo).

He said this while addressing a press conference in cafeteria of parliament here Tuesday. He told BNP had decided to resign from senate , national assembly, provincial assembly and district government.
...
He alleged the incumbent government and the generals are murderers of Nawab Akbar Bugti. Forces be withdrawn from Balochistan and NATO troops be deployed there.

What? Did we miss something?

Apparently! Somewhere in between the hunt for the real reason why Rashid Rauf was arrested and the stunning interruption in the Pakistani cricket tour to Britain, we did miss something of importance. I've been meaning to blog about it, but in the midst of everything else it hasn't quite risen to the top of my To-Do List --- until now!

A Brilliant and Scathing Criticism of Kean and Hamilton, and their new book, and their ... play ... um ... ploy!
By Winter Patriot on 9/5/2006 11:33am PT

In a very interesting new document which you will find posted in full below, the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition weighs in on the state of our nation's knowledge of what happened to us on 9/11/2001.

With the help of attorney Bill Weaver, former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds, though she is under a "state-secrets" gag order, still manages to call 'em as she sees 'em, and among the things she sees:

[Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton] are consistent in doing nothing and proclaiming that to be a sign of their devotion to the country and the government. [Samuel] Beckett once said that “habit is the ballast that chains the dog to its vomit,” and by this measure the chain restraining Kean and Hamilton is a short one indeed.

Jeremy Schwartz of Cox News wields a mean pitchfork in today's Miami Herald
Calderon Declared 'President-Elect' ... Obrador Declared 'Marginal' ... We Report, but They Decide??
By Winter Patriot on 9/5/2006 11:08am PT

Guest blogged by Winter Patriot

I've been finding most of my internet-related news stories through Google News lately, and for the past 19 hours I've been wondering what story would succeed the death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin at the top of the charts... Now, suddenly, the wait is over.

From Will Weissert at ABC News: Calderon Named Mexico's Next President-Elect

MEXICO CITY Sep 5, 2006 (AP)— Felipe Calderon became president-elect of Mexico on Tuesday, two months after disputed elections, when the nation's top electoral court voted unanimously to reject allegations of fraud and certify his narrow victory.

And --- coincidentally? --- look at what else has floated to the top of the charts: a monstrous smear piece from our "old friends" at Cox News, in the person of Jeremy Schwartz this time.

From the Miami Herald: López Obrador's support dwindling : Mexico is starting to turn its back on Andrés Manuel López Obrador because of his refusal to concede defeat in the disputed presidential election.

MEXICO CITY - In the days after ballot results showed him losing an agonizingly close presidential election, candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador was in fine form, leading the largest rallies Mexico has ever seen and convincing most Mexicans of the need for a recount.

Six weeks later, the Mexican public has largely turned its back on the charismatic leftist, who has been transformed into a marginal figure --- to a degree even within his own party.

If the July 2 election were held now, conservative Felipe Calderón would trounce López Obrador by 24 percentage points, a recent newspaper poll showed.

Some analysts say the former Mexico City mayor has done irreparable harm to his political career by sowing unrest and refusing to accept the constitutional rules for resolving the close election.

We'll have to wait and see about that...

By Joseph Cannon on 9/5/2006 10:43am PT

Guest blogged by Joseph Cannon

As you probably know, ABC plans to commemorate 9/11 with a lying "docudrama" designed to portray Bill Clinton as soft on terrorism. As a small counter to such assaults on history, AmericaBlog reminds us the the Republicans once had a very different attitude toward terrorism.

In July of 1996, Clinton asked Congress for increased wiretapping authority in order to catch terrorists --- unlike Bush, who simply assumed such powers, consulting his lawyers instead of the legislators. The Republicans smacked down the idea, citing the dangers of increased presidential powers.

They also fired up their base with dark tales of a Clinton power-grab, using terror as a excuse. You can relive this history as I did --- by firing up Google Groups in order to see what Clinton's conservative opponents were saying about terrorism ten years ago.

Below, you will find a hastily-compiled selection of excerpts. Some of these comments were written directly for usenet, others are quotes from web sites or printed sources. In order to convey an impressionistic sense of how conservatives thought at that time, I've decided to forego names and dates; if you want full context, fire up Google for yourself. All the quotes appeared somewhere on usenet during 1996.

Those of you old enough to recall those days will testify that these sentiments were widely shared in conservative circles. The change in attitude is almost as stunning as the attempt to change history itself. As you read, ask yourself if you can imagine any of our modern death-to-Islam types saying such things about Bush or the current world situation:

Anti-terrorist hysteria has become the excuse for governmental attempts to circumvent online freedom of expression, guaranteed by constitutions, laws, and the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
It was to be expected that laws made under such circumstances of semi-hysteria would be imperfect and threatening to the liberties of innocent American citizens whose only "crime" was belonging to a "suspect" group or class whose opinions were not "politically correct." Such we believe was the case with the original "Terror Bill", and such we believe to be the case today with the legislation proposed by the Clinton Administration in the wake of the downing of TWA Flight 800 and the Olympic bombing in Atlanta.
Clinton could SAVE several billions instead of spending a meagerly $100 million by curbing U.S. terrorism with its predictable response from others. How? Stop what we're doing around the world.

Democrats in Florida's 24th Congressional District are used to being surprised by Tom Feeney (left), but he's been surprising them again during the past few days. They have reported receiving fliers in the mail --- and phone calls, too --- which appear to be serious, even respectful --- if brief --- comparisons of the policy positions taken by the Republican incumbent, Feeney, and his potential Democratic challenger, Clint Curtis.

Have you voted yet? (Yes, it matters.)
By Dan Field on 9/4/2006 10:43pm PT

Guest Blogged By Dan Field

We're all on pins and needles here at Clint Curtis for Congress as the election rolls upon us. For those who haven't been following the race, election fraud whistleblower Clint Curtis --- who says he was asked to deliver a computer program to U.S. Congressman Tom Feeney to flip the vote in Florida --- hopes to run against Feeney himself in the general election in November. But to do that, he has to defeat Democratic rival Andy Michaud.

The interesting wrinkle? Michaud has been virtually a complete no-show on the campaign trail! In fact, many newspaper columnists have simply written him off. He hasn't appeared at any events in weeks and didn't even bother to show up for a 10-minute televised debate with Curtis on the local NBC affiliate!

So it would appear that Curtis has the Democratic nomination in the bag, right?

Well, this is Florida we're talking about, so who knows what sort of chicanery could happen.

With Three Spots For Ohio And Only Eight For The Other 49 States, It Hardly Seems Fair!
By Winter Patriot on 9/4/2006 3:51pm PT

Guest blogged by Winter Patriot

Mother Jones has the skinny on eleven of the worst places to try and vote in America, courtesy of Sasha Abramsky:

Just Try Voting Here: 11 of America's worst places to cast a ballot (or try)

I won't spoil the top ten for you. But here's what Sasha says about number eleven:

#11 Politicos in Charge
Ohio

Election activists don't have Florida's Katherine Harris to kick around anymore, but in a system where most states' top election officials are also politicians, there's no shortage of other nominees for worst secretary of state. The current leading candidate must be Ohio's Ken Blackwell, now a Republican candidate for governor, who seems intent on making sure as few Ohioans as possible are registered to vote. In 2004 Blackwell achieved national notoriety when he announced that his office would accept only voter-registration forms printed on paper of at least 80-pound weight. Blackwell had to back off that requirement, but a slew of other restrictions remain, including one under which door-to-door registration workers must sign in with county officials, and another requiring them to personally mail in the registration forms they collect. "The constant promulgation of rules and regulations keeps members of the Board of Elections jumping around like cats on a hot tin roof," says Chris Link, executive director of the Ohio ACLU. "And this essentially hurts Democrats. Who is newly registering? People who've just become citizens, young people who've just gotten the right to vote." Meanwhile, Blackwell's office has done nothing to inform voters that come Election Day this year, they will have to bring photo IDs to the polls --- guaranteeing that tens of thousands of mostly Democratic voters will be turned away.

Please read the whole article.

CONFESSION: This piece was originally blogged with an incorrect heading which claimed "Ohio didn't even make the top ten" ... in fact Ohio claimed two of the top four spots. So that was a big FUMBLE! by your nearly frozen host, spotted by Lorraine Bieber. My apologies.

Still on the road. Somewhere in Oklahoma. Was sidelined by a surprise death in the family, necessitating an unplanned trip to Dallas for a funeral. So, aside from that, now a week behind my planned return to Los Angeles. Will be back next week... at some point... prior to Saturday the 16th when I'm hosting a huge Election Integrity event sponsored by SoCal Grassroots and VelvetRevolution.us with Gore Vidal, Maxine Waters, Debra Bowen and many others in Los Angeles! More details here....

Barely online last week, and may be off the grid entirely this week. Driving me crazy, especially with so much going on, but Guest Bloggers are doing great it looks like from my two minutes’ online (and hours on the phone!) to keep track. Must leave this motel right now!

Good luck to Clint Curtis tomorrow in Florida! Looks like the national PDA has now endorsed him as well! And Tom Feeney is as bizarre as usual (see this TPMCafe post, and watch for more here from WP or Gideon.) Suspect Feeney is up to dirty tricks? You betcha!

RIP Steve Irwin... and more as soon as I can get back onto the grid full time... which I now actually look forward to! Until then... rock on, Bradcorps!

Looking South: Organized and Passionate Activism

Andres Manuel
Lopez-Obrador
“AMLO”

It is a pleasure to be here at The BRAD BLOG. Many thanks to Brad Friedman, Paul Lehto, Winter Patriot, and Emily Levy, to name those I know, for their show of courage, intelligence, and patriotism in the California 50th Congressional District recount case. Sunshine is a great tonic.

Why does Mexico matter?

Mexico matters because the people and leaders knew election problems were coming and they did something about it. They protested in massive numbers, again and again. The Mexican people are offering the largest resistance to election fraud in modern history. Think of the demonstrations in the Ukraine, Belarus, the Georgia Republic, or any other post election protest. Over a period of 15 days, there were three Assemblies sponsored by Lopez-Obrador and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). These demonstrations attract over a million people (in a nation of 100 million). The corporate media tried to downplay the crowd size with Bloomberg News failing to mention a 1.1 million estimate it got on July 16 from police authorities. These are vibrant, involved people who work with their leaders, particularly Presidential candidate Lopez-Obrador, to develop plans and fend off attacks by the ruling party.

Is the right-wing trying out a new tool; the US Constitution?
Could these court rulings in San Diego and now Nevada simply be to set precedents? Could it be the move of the GOP using activist judges who are clearly legislating from the bench in order to set a precedent to be used in November? Is this all the portent of things to come in November?
By John Gideon on 9/2/2006 10:29am PT

Let me preface this with a statement. I am not an attorney. I'm just a retired "knuckle dragger" (marine machinist). While I'm not an academic I do have the ability to read something and know what it says especially when it is written in clear English. I've also got a bit more common sense than most academics because I've had to exercise it throughout my life.

Any reader of The BRAD BLOG is familiar with the court decision from San Diego County. Essentially the judge ruled that he did not have jurisdiction in an election contest of the Busby/Bilbray CA50 U.S. House Special Election because Bilbray was already sworn in as a member of Congress and the US Constitution gives the Legislative Branch jurisdiction over elections of their members.

Today's Nevada Appeal has an article regarding a court challenge that stemmed from problems in the GOP primary election for Congress. That race between Dean Heller, present Secretary of State, and Sharron Angle, was closely contested and Ms. Angle filed the challenge based on what she thought to be possibly illegal practices in Washoe County.

But then they played the Busby/Bilbray 'Constitutional Jurisdiction' card. Just as in Busby/Bilbray...

Curtis: 'Seems like Feeney is scared to death of the truth.'
By Winter Patriot on 9/1/2006 8:00pm PT

Guest blogged by Winter Patriot

According to usually reliable sources, Congressman Tom Feeney (R-FL) flexed enough muscle on Monday night to have his potential November opponent, Clint Curtis, evicted from what was supposed to be a public meeting.

The meeting, at the Republican Club of North Brevard, in Titusville, FL, featured Feeney as a speaker. Curtis was sitting quietly in the audience when Feeney noticed him there. At that point, according to our sources, Feeney immediately turned bright red and started whispering to some of the people near him.

One of those people raised a point of order and pointed out that there was a Democrat in the room. She said she wanted him to leave because this was a Republican meeting and she did not feel it was appropriate to have a Democrat in the audience.

The chair said that perhaps Democratic members of the audience would be converted to Republicans. When others objected to Curtis' presence at the meeting, the chair informed them that it was an open meeting and the rules required that Curtis be allowed to stay.

Tonight we had two segments on voting issues. The first on the lawsuit in Ohio against Ken Blackwell, will help to ensure the 2004 voting records are saved for longer than may be the whim of Blackwell. The suit also asks that Blackwell be removed from the ability to oversee his own election for governor. Also HR-550 is discussed by Congressman Rush Holt and a representative of Election Science Institute.
Note: While they reported that the bill has 159 co-sponsors the number is actually 211 or 209 when you discount one co-sponsor who is now a Senator and the District of Columbia delegate who has no real vote.

The text-transcript of tonight's segment on Lou Dobbs Tonight follows in full...
